Gradient Canopy is one of the first times Google led the concept and construction of its own campus. Situated on an 18-acre site, Gradient Canopy expands the boundaries of sustainable design with flexible workspace, healthy and reclaimed materials, and spaces for both employees and the community to enjoy. Our team partnered with HLW’s interior architecture team to develop a unique vocabulary and identity strategy to ground Googlers and visitors in this dynamic floor plate.
The interior design and artwork reinforce the spirit of Google and honor four of the Bay Area’s natural biomes (ocean, bay, redwood, foothills). These themes drive each courtyard’s distinct character to build a sense of place. Within these spaces and throughout the building, we designed, fabricated, and installed large-scale sculptures, boundary-pushing floor graphics, murals, branding, and art curation moments.
The voices of local artists were vital in giving this project a sense of place and authenticity. We developed and executed an extensive art curation process to integrate these unique Bay Area artists into these space. From large-scale murals to small corridor vignettes, a distinctive palette of artistic expression is present throughout the building.
